Upgrading your droid’s rarity is one of the most important things you can do in Droid Tycoon. A higher rarity means more revenue and potentially stronger companion abilities. The process isn’t immediately obvious if you haven’t stumbled across the upgrade stand yet, so here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how it exactly works and where to go!
Step 1: Equip the Droid You Want to Upgrade
Before you can do anything else, make sure the droid you want to upgrade is currently equipped as your active companion. The upgrade stand only works on whichever droid you currently have following you around, so if you upgrade with the wrong one active, you could be wasting chips on a droid you didn’t intend to.

Step 2: Collect Upgrade Chips From Around The Map
Upgrade Chips spawn randomly across the map and are your currency for upgrading rarity. Keep an eye out for them as you’re exploring and managing your workshop, as they can show up in a variety of places. If you focus specifically on collecting Upgrade Chips, you may also notice that by the time you make a full lap around the world map, old spawn locations have refreshed with more Upgrade Chips.

Step 3: Find The Upgrade Stand Behind the Main Building
This is the step most people miss and end up confused by, feeling like Upgrade Chips are a currency they just haven’t unlocked the ability to use yet. If you head to the main building, where you can trade with NPCs and upgrade your pickaxe, walk around the outside of the building instead of going inside. On the back side of the main building will be the Upgrade booth, just slightly out of sight from the main area but still attached to the back wall. Below is a gallery slideshow of where to go, starting from the droid conveyor belt.

Step 4: Interact With the Rainbow Droid to Upgrade
At the upgrade stand, you’ll find a rainbow-colored droid. Interact with it, and an upgrade prompt will appear for your currently equipped companion. If you confirm the upgrade, your currently equipped droid will go up a tier! Keep in mind that the chip cost increases based on the droid’s rarity and how common it is to actually find, so some droids may cost more than others.

And there you have it! You can now upgrade any droids you may need for rebirthing, better revenue sources, or simply a higher-tier companion buff with ease!
