FFXIV Players Got An Adorable Otter Backpack By Mistake, Now Square Enix Is Taking It Back

After patch 7.5 dropped earlier this week, a number of Final Fantasy XIV players opened their fashion accessories tab to find an unexpected surprise: a small, dapper otter backpack called the Senor Otter Pack sitting in their inventory, completely unexplained. Nobody remembered earning it. Nobody remembered unlocking it. It was just there, looking like the equally charming and mysterious dapper lil guy he is.

Some players instantly began to make jokes about the Otter Backpack making himself home in inventories around Eorzea and for a brief, beautiful window of time, players got to simply enjoy the accidental otter. Square Enix later had to come along and confirm this was a bug, and that they would be taking custody of the Otter back in an upcoming hotfix.

How Did He Show Up?

As it turns out, the internal ID for the Senor Otter Pack was incorrectly configured to the same internal ID as the Black Embroidered Parasol fashion accessory, meaning anyone who already had unlocked the Parasol for gothic fashion or other collectible reasons also inadvertently unlocked the Senor Otter Pack. Square Enix posted the explanation on the Lodestone and confirmed the hotfix would correct the ID overlap, at which point the Senor Otter Pack will disappear from the inventories of everyone who got it by accident.

The Otter Will Return.

The silver lining in this announcement is that the Otter is not gone forever. Square Enix has said they hope players will acquire the Senor Otter Pack again when it is released through the intended method. As for what that intended method actually is, Square Enix hasn’t specified. Luckily, thanks to FFXIV Collect, it would appear both this fashion accessory and a new Senor Otter Minion are set to be rewards in the upcoming Make it Rain Campaign for 2026.

Senor Otter – An otter and a gentleman.

This automaton brings the odder otter to life in the gentlemanly attire of Senor Sabotender, one of the Gold Saucer’s beloved mascots. Masterfully crafted by the inimitable Godbert Manderville for an event, it was distributed among select collaborators, with proceeds to go towards otter conservation efforts.

For those unaware of this campaign, it’s a Gold Saucer-themed event that typically runs in late May to early June and rewards players with 50% increased MGP rewards as well as limited time cosmetics for players to claim.

In the meantime, the community has taken to social media to mourn the upcoming (but temporary) loss of this unexpected inventory traveler in the same way that I feel the fella deserves.

If you currently have the Senor Otter Pack in your fashion accessories and haven’t applied it yet, it’s worth doing so before the hotfix drops. Obviously it will be removed from your character when the fix goes live but you can run around and watch the Otter wiggle his legs as you move around until then. Might as well build up a connection before the Make it Rain event returns him to our paws.
